Julian isn’t all just beautiful views and famous apple pies,
the town also boasts a rich history.

Julian was founded in the early 1870s after the discovery of gold in the surrounding Cuyamaca Mountains,
which sparked a brief but lively gold rush. Former Confederate veterans and pioneers,
including cousins Drue Bailey and Mike Julian, settled the town, and Julian quickly grew into a bustling mining hub.

Though the gold eventually ran out, Julian endured—the town’s 19th-century charm, scenic mountain setting,
and famous apple orchards have kept its pioneering spirit alive ever since.
